Recently, trying to think of how to incorporate web2.0 technology into the lives of students without feeling like it’s always to do with homework or a specific task.

With exams looming on the horizon – I noticed a few apps which were Starbucks pick of the week which could helps students during these next few weeks!

Starbucks pick of the week is free for that week (then usually they go back to their full normal retail price). Due to the app only being free for the week it was a great incentive for students to download the apps that week as opposed to taking their time to downloaded which usually ended up in students not downloading the apps and trying them,

Some of the apps  which the students and myself tasked ourselves to try are outlined as below.


Streaks

It helps you turn the little goals in life into good daily habits. It is a great way for example to get into the habit of practicing a new language for ten minutes each day. I would highly recommend Streaks for anyone who is trying to encourage students to get into the habit of doing ten extra ten minutes of a particular subject which they need work that little bit harder at.

Pause

Pause has fast become an app that has I been able to use in both in the classroom and outside the classroom. It is a simple, yet very powerful app. It allows you to take a moment to pause, collect your thoughts and start afresh. Furthermore, when teaching meditation this app is a great app for students to download and use at home. Some students have said they feel they are more focused as they are able to take five or ten minutes out in the evening time and meditate. One other great feature about this app if you are pitching it to students is they are following the instructions and light while meditating which will help them to focus if they feel they will not be able to meditate at home.

Religion e-books

 

Researching for lessons, I came across a lot of Religion books which are now available in e-form and online.

A few examples of these online books are:

  • Religion Living is now available for Ipads.

  • A question of Faith 3rd Edition

 

  • Why should you use these resources?

These two online  religious education textbooks are both easy to use in the classroom and work closely with the curriculum – whether your class is exam or non-exam.

Furthermore, due to these textbooks being online they are packed with interactive resources and handouts with compliment the textbooks.

These handouts are ideal when revising over a topic or trying to learn a new key term.

  • Teaching tips

These online resources and e-books have many links and tips to resources which can be used in the classroom. They also have teacher notes and are always helpful.

We never stop learning thus it’s exciting to see how these e-books will be used in the classroom.

Update: Finally have the blog up!

CESI

For those of you reading this blog and do not know who CESI is they are the leaders in readings to technology being used in the classroom.

Last weekend they held a conference which many attended. Myself and @msdignam attend the Friday Teachmeet where we got to interact with the events and have a taste of what was to come on the Saturday.

We saw lots of interesting presentations and different ideas which will be progressing into classrooms near you.

If you want a taste of the weekend look up the live tweet that was used throughout CESI #CESI16 and have a read through the second by second updates as they occurred.

CESI was a conference which was unlike no other – you were invited to talk to the presenters, everyone was curious and taking up great initiative in schools or different sectors of education. Furthermore, what really struck me was the use of technology throughout the whole event. Each person was live tweeting the conference and presenters as well encouraged people to use their movies, tablets, ipads, laptops, and macs, anything that could connect to the Wi-Fi and stay in touch with the live tweeting that was occurring.

It was an amazing event and well worth checking out!

One of the key note speakers who stood out at CESI was Neil Butler @mrNeilButler. If you haven’t joined up with him on twitter – I highly recommend you do. Mr. Neil Butler is an up and coming one to watch.

One of the reasons why Neil was someone who caught everyone’s attention and won the B award was his use of Grand Theft Auto to teach angles.

Creativity in maths in endless but to being alive maths (which I admit is a tough one) is amazing and a credit to Neil.

Furthermore, Derek Breen was another key note speaker who caught the attention of the whole room. For those of you who do not know Derek Breen I would highly recommend you look him up on twitter.

How he captured the whole room attention was he stood up on a chair and did his presentation from this chair. It was unusual and defiantly one way to do a presentation. Each key idea or conference Derek Breen was talking about was printed on a tshirt he was wearing. Once he completed point, he would take off that tshirt revealing another tshirt – and idea!

I would highly recommend the CESI conference for any who is thinking of starting into conferences or wants to know more about how technology can be used in education – or even bring the classroom alive!

A few Web 2.0 Tools for the Classroom

 

A few new Web 2.0 tools which I have come across  which could be of great use in the classroom.

  1. Highlighter App

This simple app can be downloaded from the Chrome Store or the Apple store depending on which device you are using. There is many variations to this app but each have the simple understanding that when you are online or using a device you like to highlight key points or ideas which catch your attention as you are reading. Price depends on what you are looking for; however in general it seems to be free to download and use.

 

2. Second Life

I came across Second Life by chance. However, so far I have been very impressed by it’s concept and ideas. It allows people to create a free 3D virtual world.

When teaching history, it’s important to try and use visuals in the classroom. For example, when teaching the Romans, minecraft has a huge selection of visuals which can be used when teaching about the Roman villa or domus.

However, allowing students to create their own Roman Villa or Domus – or even Roman town would bring topics alive for students. Additionally, this will allow students to bring history alive and into the twenty-first century through this Web 2.0 tool.

3. Answer Garden

Answer Garden is a web 2.0 tool which I have yet to use – yet I have heard very positive things about it from those I know who have used it in a classroom setting.

Answer Garden allows for a teacher or student to a put a question in and press the submit button. The most frequent answers are shown. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Glogster

Glogster  is a new Web 2.0 technology that allows students and teachers to make multimedia posters.

Glogster is an excellent Web 2.0 Technology ties into the NCCA Key Skills as well.

  1. Glogster encourages students to think critically and creatively as they have to create a multimedia poster but use relevant information.
  2. They have to process information to make the multimedia poster.
  3. When making a multimedia poster they have to communicate with their teacher and fellow classmates when making a multimedia poster.
  4. If the teacher uses Glogster in class, students will have to think what they want to do, how they want to create the poster and how much information they want to put on the poster and can they achieve their plan in the limited amount of time they will have.

Additionally, it’s great for students as there is already made templates and examples for students full of media which can help them get ideas.

It’s also free and easy for students to use as well as being safe.

Coggle

Coggle is a clear way to share complex information!

I’m going to try it this week when breaking down the Junior Certificate History Exam for Junior Certificate students sitting mocks soon.

Coggle is great for this time of year as you are able to break down complex topics such as the Plantations into key terms, key figures, dates and results.

I highly recommended Coggle for revising topics or going over particularly difficult topics.

 

Edmodo

Edmodo is a free web based platform which allows both students and parents to connect and collaborate with teachers both inside and outside the classroom.


 

Safety

Safety is seen to be the number one reason why an increasing number of teachers are using edmodo in the classroom.Additionally, it allows students and teacher to communicate with each other outside of the classroom – in a professional manner.

It’s designed to allow social networking in the classroom but in a controlled and safe manner.

Students can post and chat to each other via a wall. You can see the similarity of edmodo to other social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter in its layout in a classroom setting. These familiar layouts can increase student’s confidence in collaborating with others students thus creating an online learning environment which can promote potential among students.

Students can’t create accounts without their teacher thus there is no spam accounts or false pretence as to who is online. How this is done is each account is set up by a teacher and given a unique code which they can give to their students.


Another appeal is teachers can upload documents as it can be difficult to locate handouts and powerpoints weeks after they have been given out in class.

Additionally, Edmodo is accessible on moblie phones making it ideal to log in and quickly check something while on the go.

Would I recommend it?

The verdict on edmodo is this is one of the most useful and available resources that should be taken advantage of by teachers and students. It also allows for an open communication between the teachers and parents as to what is being covered in class and what notes students should have!

New Web 2.0 Tools

Last week I was present for a short presentation on many many web 2.0 tools which I had never heard of before. I’m slowly going through each of the web 2.0 tools which were presented on. Some of them I had already heard of but was not sure of what they did.
