Storybird is a Web 2.0 Tool which is an excellent tool for encouraging literacy and creativity in the classroom.


 

In a learning scenario, “starting with pictures” is powerful: it stirs the emotions while it engages the brain and jumpstarts students into their text, avoiding the blank-page syndrome. And it’s effective.

As stated on their website it allows students to overcome blank page syndrome which they can suffer when they feel pressured and overwhelmed when trying to think outside out the box when it comes to essay writing and creative lessons.

As storybird is free to use and an accessible platform for all ages it could encourage students and family to create a story – which allows students families to feel more connected in their students learning.

Also, it allows for communal projects and collaborations between both students and classes. This cross over can led to a library of books which can be sold and published if it’s wished through the paid feature to download and sell a book created. This incentive to allow students work to be sold and publish work can not only build up the students and schools portfolio but raise much needed funds for schools.


 

A massive attraction of Storybird is that it can be used with any devices, whether it be a phone, a tablet, a laptop, a netbook or a school computer.

One other feature which I would encourage when using storybird is the use of paragraphs. For History and English paragraphs play a huge part in the layout of essays and the overall presentation/impression mark.

One other feature of storybird which makes it very attractive in a classroom and school setting is due to the simple fact that it’s a private website no data is collected. A rising problem with websites is the collection of data and the risk this poses for users in the future.

Web 2.0 – History Hub

Another great history resource is History Hub.

History Hub is a great resource for senior cycle history and even an undergraduate standards.

It has excellent resources for Junior and Leaving Certificate history and with the 1916 Rising coming up listening to Podcasts is an excellent way to engage students in the classroom and get them motivated in helping commemorate 1916.

Additionally, one feature of History Hub which I enjoyed is their From the Archives section of their website. More and more it’s noticeable that students are losing out on engaging with primary and secondary sources as we are teaching for an exam. Though true it’s great to be able to use primary sources from archives whereas possible.

Additionally,for T.Y. and senior cycle history students can use the website to get ideas for Research projects and topics.

Another simple fact about History Hub which makes it worth checking out is it’s updated regularly and they have a mailing list which you can subscribe to. I found this idea appealing as I sometimes forget what website I saw a great resource on but if I’m on their mailing list a quick search of emails usually turns up what I was looking for.

In today’s world we are completely immersed in technology. Recently, while reviewing Web 2.0 tools and looking at how to incorporate new ideas into the classroom. For example I used the star wars and arcade generator off classtools.net. Though these web 2.0 tools are marvelous to use and explore it’s easy to forget how immersed in technology we are becoming.

It’s sometimes easy to forget to look up at the world around you. One prime example of people forgetting to look up at the world around us is at the Bus stop.

 

While we stand at the bus stop we are all culprits of having our phones out and checking our phones for updates and news.

Though I see the benefit of the being immersed in technology I think it’s wise to remind ourselves of how to put away technology, even for a brief period in time.

 

 

Sharing resources

Sharing resources is possibly one of the best ways to learn and build up a portfolio of lessons.

I know some teachers do not like to share which is understandable as sometimes you have it tailored to your class and your style of teaching.However, some teachers are fantastic at sharing resources and helping other teachers with resources and ideas.

A few website which are full of teachers who share ideas and resources which are free to download (for the most part) are as follows:

Since publishing this blog – this weeks #edchatie was all about sharing!

Some amazing resources were shared and a huge amount of teachers and educators took part in sharing many web2.0 tools and resources. I will post the transcript to this blog when it is published tomorrow!

A web 2.0 tool that is frequently used by many educators is Twitter!

Inspired by the recent assignment to look at communication in regards to the key skills being rolled out the new junior cycle I have realised I have not communicated via blog how great a resource #edchatie is for teachers. Though I have blogged about twitter quite a bit – I feel I may have overlooked giving you a detailed insight to #edchatie which is held each monday night between 8.30-9.30pm on twitter.

It was set up by Fred Boss  (@fboss ) of the NCTE (National Centre for Technology in Education). Each week @fboss uploads a poll open to suggestions of questions and topics that could be discussed vai the micro-blogging platform twitter each Monday night between 8.30-9.30pm. People are free to vote which one should be discussed. Once the poll has closed the topic and questions are tweeted out to the masses.

Each person is encouraged to use the #edchatie when discussing the chosen topic or question.

For example a recent topic which was discussed:”Teaching with teachers not open to technology”. This was a great discussion and promoted many views from all sides of the discussion.

Unfortunately, due to the huge volume of responses I was not able to read ever tweet and response on twitter – even when using twitterdeck! (web 2.0 tool I highly recommended if into twitter, or even beginning to use twitter)

Instead of being disappointed – I was able to download the whole discussion via a transcript a few hours later on the edchatie website. (http://edchatie.pbworks.com/w/page/37159466/edchatIE%20Summaries)

#edchatie is one of the best discussion to join into if you are a teacher (even more so if you are teaching in Ireland). It connects you with hundreds of other teachers in similar situations and you can share tips or problems you have – which can be resolved in a matter of minutes in some cases!

What would you do? Morals – LC example

Morals – What would you do?

What would you do  (WWYD) is an American newsmagazine and situational hidden camera television programme that has been broadcast on ABC since February 26, 2008. It is hosted by news correspondent John Quiñones.

The program features actors acting out scenes of conflict or illegal activity in public settings while hidden cameras videotape the scene, and the focus is on whether or not bystanders intervene, and how. Variations are also usually included, such as changing the genders, the races or the clothing of the actors performing the scene, to see if bystanders react differently. Quiñones appears at the end of each scenario to interview bystanders and witnesses about their reactions.

As the experiment goes on, psychology professors, teachers, or club members watch and discuss the video with Quiñones, explaining and making inferences on the bystanders’ reactions.

How does this tie into Morals?

First of all look at the Definition of Morals: concerned with or relating to human behaviour, especially the distinction between good and bad or right and wrong behaviour: moral sense. 2. adhering to conventionally accepted standards of conduct. 3. based on a sense of right and wrong according to conscience: moral courage, moral law.

How does this relate to the Leaving Certificate Curriculum aims?

What would you do ties into these LC Religious Education aims:

  • The general aim of education is to contribute towards the development of all aspects of the individual, including aesthetic, creative, critical, cultural, emotional, expressive, intellectual, for personal and home life, for working life, for living in the community and for leisure.
  • Additionally, it also ties into All Leaving Certificate programmes, in contributing to a high quality education, emphasise the importance of : self-directed learning and independent thought, a spirit of inquiry, critical thinking, problem solving, self-reliance, initiative and enterprise, preparation for further education, for adult and working life and lifelong learning

as it promotes students to become aware of the global world in which they are living in today and how they interact with the world around them is done through Morals.

Also, WWYD raises topical and current issues which are in the media which the students can relate to. This can promote critical thinking and engaging responses from students on topics which require personal language in an everyday situation. (Ties into to examine some understandings of ‘morality’ and the implication of these understandings for personal decision-making and to identify the elements and context of a moral decision.)

Why use WWYD in the classroom in regards to Technology (Web 2.0 Tool)

WWYD is a viewed by the students through a web 2.0 tool – YouTube. This is incorporating and expanding students minds as to how they view short clips online – social online awareness.

Additionally, it highlights critical thinking and moral judgement to students to never judge a book by its cover either – as it’s revealed that each scenario those in the video are witnesses to are set up so to speak.

Don’t judge a book by it’s cover

Recently, the topic of don’t judge a book by it’s cover seems to be very topical.

Everywhere we turn in today’s world we are judging how much people have and who they are friends with. This is especially true in schools when the latest phone or trend comes out. Sometimes students can feel very judged and often feel misheard as well by their fellow peers.

Thus I feel it’s important to mention in class that each students voice and reaction is important and should be expressed in the classroom.

One good example is one class were asked recently to bring in music and songs close to them. There was a huge variety of music chosen and shared within the class. However, one student in particular was reluctant to share for fear her peers would ridicule her due to her taste of music. As teachers we have to embrace all differences in the class and encourage students to be comfortable within the classroom environment.

Top ways to create a safe space in a classroom:

  • Display students work in the classroom
  • Admit when you don’t know something (within reason)
  • Read with your students
  • Follow through with Consequences
  • Smile often
  • Open the door at the end of class
  • Music feeds the soul

 

Roundtable: The Last Thing I Read that Moved Me

Words are as powerful as you want them to be. They can be harsh. They can be kind. They don’t have to be complex. They are what you want it to be!

Great resource to highlight how words can have an impact on you and the people surrounding you. When teaching remember your words can have an influence on the person who you are teaching. Keep passionate about your subject and that will shine through your teaching and work!

Literature and Killing time combined

Waiting at public places is one thing that we, humans, do not find as an exciting task to do. (http://ht.ly/TB8e6)


exam stressTravelling and waiting around is part of the everyday hum of society – especially in schools! We ask students to wait outside the classroom while we get ready for the next class or while talking to another students or teacher. Even when we are commuting home from school and work – There is always time to kill. 

While we always have our screens (be it phones, cameras, ipads, tablets, computers) to keep us entertained going back to basics reading a small piece of literature is an excellent idea! This project of using a free short story dispenser as a way to combat killing time in public spaces is one that can be transmitted into the classroom. 

This has inspired a little project which hopefully I can have in place in the classroom soon – print off small historical stories that students can take with them to read while killing time. It’s a simple project which will take some time to get up and running. However, hopefully it will inspire students to take a moment away from their phones and learn something new!

Open to any good history stories which could prove a nail biting short read!
