What is a Teachmeet?

According to Teach meet Ireland:

A Teachmeet is an organised (but informal) meeting where participants are offered a variety of nano (two-minute) or macro (seven-minute) presentations on any aspect of education.

Participants can be actively involved as presenters, or can simply relax and listen to all that will be on offer.

A great way to learn fresh and new ideas to bring into your classroom! Some of the best ideas are those that are shared among teachers.

Apps

Recently, trying to think of how to incorporate web2.0 technology into the lives of students without feeling like it’s always to do with homework or a specific task.

With exams looming on the horizon – I noticed a few apps which were Starbucks pick of the week which could helps students during these next few weeks!

Starbucks pick of the week is free for that week (then usually they go back to their full normal retail price). Due to the app only being free for the week it was a great incentive for students to download the apps that week as opposed to taking their time to downloaded which usually ended up in students not downloading the apps and trying them,

Some of the apps  which the students and myself tasked ourselves to try are outlined as below.


Streaks

It helps you turn the little goals in life into good daily habits. It is a great way for example to get into the habit of practicing a new language for ten minutes each day. I would highly recommend Streaks for anyone who is trying to encourage students to get into the habit of doing ten extra ten minutes of a particular subject which they need work that little bit harder at.

Pause

Pause has fast become an app that has I been able to use in both in the classroom and outside the classroom. It is a simple, yet very powerful app. It allows you to take a moment to pause, collect your thoughts and start afresh. Furthermore, when teaching meditation this app is a great app for students to download and use at home. Some students have said they feel they are more focused as they are able to take five or ten minutes out in the evening time and meditate. One other great feature about this app if you are pitching it to students is they are following the instructions and light while meditating which will help them to focus if they feel they will not be able to meditate at home.

Ignoring his twitter page he has somehow incorporated grand theft auto in the classroom for Pythagoras theorem. He drives out a course and then gets the students to use the course and apply them to the theorems.

Tech Week is Ireland’s nationwide festival of technology aimed at students, parents and the public. Tech Week provides hands-on opportunities to learn about how computing and related technology are shaping every area of life .Education, health, environment, social interaction, leisure, citizenship … the list never ends and the pace of change never stops.

It’s part of a scratch pack – didn’t manage to get one but emailing and tweeting to see if I can get my hands on one for the school.

Allowing people to create their own timetables and plans online. Free app – easy to download on ios, android and online at their web store. It could be used to encourage students to take control of their own study planning if it’s an app online which can be downloaded onto their phones.

CESI

For those of you reading this blog and do not know who CESI is they are the leaders in readings to technology being used in the classroom.

Last weekend they held a conference which many attended. Myself and @msdignam attend the Friday Teachmeet where we got to interact with the events and have a taste of what was to come on the Saturday.

We saw lots of interesting presentations and different ideas which will be progressing into classrooms near you.

If you want a taste of the weekend look up the live tweet that was used throughout CESI #CESI16 and have a read through the second by second updates as they occurred.

CESI was a conference which was unlike no other – you were invited to talk to the presenters, everyone was curious and taking up great initiative in schools or different sectors of education. Furthermore, what really struck me was the use of technology throughout the whole event. Each person was live tweeting the conference and presenters as well encouraged people to use their movies, tablets, ipads, laptops, and macs, anything that could connect to the Wi-Fi and stay in touch with the live tweeting that was occurring.

It was an amazing event and well worth checking out!

One of the key note speakers who stood out at CESI was Neil Butler @mrNeilButler. If you haven’t joined up with him on twitter – I highly recommend you do. Mr. Neil Butler is an up and coming one to watch.

One of the reasons why Neil was someone who caught everyone’s attention and won the B award was his use of Grand Theft Auto to teach angles.

Creativity in maths in endless but to being alive maths (which I admit is a tough one) is amazing and a credit to Neil.

Furthermore, Derek Breen was another key note speaker who caught the attention of the whole room. For those of you who do not know Derek Breen I would highly recommend you look him up on twitter.

How he captured the whole room attention was he stood up on a chair and did his presentation from this chair. It was unusual and defiantly one way to do a presentation. Each key idea or conference Derek Breen was talking about was printed on a tshirt he was wearing. Once he completed point, he would take off that tshirt revealing another tshirt – and idea!

I would highly recommend the CESI conference for any who is thinking of starting into conferences or wants to know more about how technology can be used in education – or even bring the classroom alive!

A few Web 2.0 Tools for the Classroom

 

A few new Web 2.0 tools which I have come across  which could be of great use in the classroom.

  1. Highlighter App

This simple app can be downloaded from the Chrome Store or the Apple store depending on which device you are using. There is many variations to this app but each have the simple understanding that when you are online or using a device you like to highlight key points or ideas which catch your attention as you are reading. Price depends on what you are looking for; however in general it seems to be free to download and use.

 

2. Second Life

I came across Second Life by chance. However, so far I have been very impressed by it’s concept and ideas. It allows people to create a free 3D virtual world.

When teaching history, it’s important to try and use visuals in the classroom. For example, when teaching the Romans, minecraft has a huge selection of visuals which can be used when teaching about the Roman villa or domus.

However, allowing students to create their own Roman Villa or Domus – or even Roman town would bring topics alive for students. Additionally, this will allow students to bring history alive and into the twenty-first century through this Web 2.0 tool.

3. Answer Garden

Answer Garden is a web 2.0 tool which I have yet to use – yet I have heard very positive things about it from those I know who have used it in a classroom setting.

Answer Garden allows for a teacher or student to a put a question in and press the submit button. The most frequent answers are shown. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Working well with others

Recently I have students doing projects in the run up to mid-term and over mid-term break. The students have been given the option to do the projects on their own or in groups. These options have created a dynamic in the classroom with students communicating and organising with one another as to how they are going to do the assignments with some families and friends taking the break as an opportunity to leave the country.

These students are facing the challenge of communication and working well with others. Though I already have a blog done on communication and working well in regards to the Key Skills – it is interesting to review how can you facilitate projects without spoon feeding students.

Using Web 2.0 technologies that I have learnt and used over the course of the module I tried to facilitate projects through these web 2.0 technologies.

 

edmodo

For example, students who were away over the mid-term could communicate via edmodo. Additionally, if they had questions about their projects or wanted to collaborate with other students they could use the wall feature on edmodo.

 

 

However, some students said they didn’t like using edmodo as they had downloaded the app feature which took up too much space on their phones – thus they deleted edmodo. Therefore, we had to go look up a new web 2.0 technology which the students could use. We finally settled on twitter as the students could use the hashtag to look up other resources and websites. Though I must admit that I presume students will probably end up using the social media website facebook.

 

Alternatives to Youtube

Using IT in the classroom is always a welcomed challenge for teachers and a distraction for students.

Films, TV documentaries, short media clips are all great resources when used correctly in the classroom. However, YouTube is not always available in secondary or primary schools due to the PDST security. Despite this many schools have set the level to incorporate YouTube.

Youtube however is a social media outlet which does wish to make profit from it’s availability and services, thus youtube has started integrating ads into youtube clips as people are skipping the advertisement. This does pose a problem in a school and learning environment.

One way to overcome this is to use quiettube. Quiettube takes out unnecessary extras and just allows the youtube clip to be shown.  It is ideal if teaching younger students or if you wish students not to be distracted. Quiettube additionally takes out the autoplay next video which can lead to distributions when teaching.

Another great IT resource to use instead of YouTube is Vimeo. Though I have discussed Vimeo in a previous post – it is always good to reflect and revise on resources.

Vimeo has been proving itself in regards to the high quality and easy to use features. One student recently, created an amazing 1916 project using Vimeo. Additionally, they were able to make the video from their phone and they had their family helping them which they said was ideal as their family then became involved in the students learning. Furthermore, using Vimeo allowed the student to experience HD quality features and enhancements which aren’t always available when uploading YouTube clips.

The wealth of resources on Vimeo is also worth noting. Most topics have something there which you can view and use. What I have found from using Vimeo in the class is it can be tedious to load at times due to the HD Quality.

Wingclips is another media clip which I would highly recommended using the classroom. It has a huge amount of short clips to choose from which are ideal in the classroom. Wingclips is designed to be easy and friendly to use. It even caught my eye that in the Catholic School Week resource pack they recommended using short clips from wingclips to tie into lessons. It was ideal to use in the classroom and also suggested other clips. Furthermore, wingclips seems to use HD quality clips which are ideal in a classroom full of students. It eliminates the usual

I can’t hear the clip or it’s very blurry.

One feature of wingclips which does put it above other websites is it has been split into themes and categories. Furthermore, it has also designed an educational section on its website. This section is packed with resources and inspirational shirt clips which can be incorporated into any lesson theme or even at the start or end of a lesson.

Additionally, wingclips has the length of the clip beside the clip and key words. Knowing the length of a clip before you even click on it is ideal if you are trying to plan a class as time is of the essence when teaching. One of the most common complaints you hear from students who are reflecting on teaching practice at this time of the year is they do not have enough time. Similar to how the crunch of the coursework is on top of many students and teachers and how they say that they feel that there isn’t enough time in the day for what needs to be done.

Also, another reason why wingclips is highly recommended for the classroom as a resource is there is no advertising or advertisements shown on the page beside the wingclips logo and a link to buy the whole documentary or clip.

Religious Education Resource is Bible.com. Though it is very much so aimed towards the Christian part of the course, it does have a huge amount of resources which can be pitched at any level. Recently, more and more clips have been uploaded to this website. Additionally, it has since adapted to the way society has gone and can be downloaded as an app. By being able to download bible.com onto your phones as an app you are able to research and look at the resources on the go. Having the option to log on via your phone and browse resources.
