Ignoring his twitter page he has somehow incorporated grand theft auto in the classroom for Pythagoras theorem. He drives out a course and then gets the students to use the course and apply them to the theorems.

Tech Week is Ireland’s nationwide festival of technology aimed at students, parents and the public. Tech Week provides hands-on opportunities to learn about how computing and related technology are shaping every area of life .Education, health, environment, social interaction, leisure, citizenship … the list never ends and the pace of change never stops.

It’s part of a scratch pack – didn’t manage to get one but emailing and tweeting to see if I can get my hands on one for the school.

Allowing people to create their own timetables and plans online. Free app – easy to download on ios, android and online at their web store. It could be used to encourage students to take control of their own study planning if it’s an app online which can be downloaded onto their phones.

Using minecraft in the classroom. Looked at how minecraft is an app which can be used in class on moblies. Not possible unless students have accounts.

Relax over midterm

It is important to remember during midterm to take a moment to reflect and relax during this time. 

Last week Starbuck app of the week to download was an app called Pause

It is good to take a moment out in your busy day to pause and recollect yourself when teaching as it is a demanding profession at the best of times. However, pausing can give you a second to collect yourself and even a moment of inspiration. 

Inspiration

Recently, as part of one module – we had to look at religious stories and how they are portrayed in the media.

Though the module has ended one story which has since caught my eye and attention is Stephanie Kurlow, a 14 year old from Australia who is wishes to become the first Muslim Hijab Ballerina.


 

Why this news report caught my attention was down to Stephanie dedication to become a ballet dancer despite the difficulties encountered while wearing her hijab.  The dedication involved in perfecting ballet is one of awe.

Seeing how even from the above picture how physically demanding ballet is – it’s inspiring to see how people can love their passion despite the hardships involved.


Students are currently preparing and undertaking their mocks. Additionally, the students not in examination years are preparing for their next major exams – summer.

While reflecting on the dedication and passion of ballet dancers – it is good to remind students similar to ballet dancers to do a little everyday. This means going over topics which may not have been revised in a while.

Glogster

Glogster  is a new Web 2.0 technology that allows students and teachers to make multimedia posters.

Glogster is an excellent Web 2.0 Technology ties into the NCCA Key Skills as well.

  1. Glogster encourages students to think critically and creatively as they have to create a multimedia poster but use relevant information.
  2. They have to process information to make the multimedia poster.
  3. When making a multimedia poster they have to communicate with their teacher and fellow classmates when making a multimedia poster.
  4. If the teacher uses Glogster in class, students will have to think what they want to do, how they want to create the poster and how much information they want to put on the poster and can they achieve their plan in the limited amount of time they will have.

Additionally, it’s great for students as there is already made templates and examples for students full of media which can help them get ideas.

It’s also free and easy for students to use as well as being safe.

Holocaust Memorial Day

With less than two weeks to go for Holocaust Memorial Day I think it’s fitting to raise awareness about this increasingly important day.

This image sends chills down the spine of anyone who knows the horrific background to this picture. For those of you who may not recognise or know this is the entrance into Auschwitz,. Auschwitz is known as one of the most horrific camps to have ever emerge  in human history.

The holocaust is one of the most disturbing ideas to be recorded. This event literally shakes the core of each person who learns of the horrific incidents, plans, thoughts, people who were involved and ultimately lives who were cruelly cut short or left with more horrific devastating pain than we can comprehend.

The Holocaust is a horrific event that should never be repeated. Everything should be done to avoid this occurring again. How we can do this is by remembering the Holocaust as ‘it’s as urgent as ever’ according to the Lincoln group this week.

There are many resources on the Holocaust which can incorporated into many different subjects and lessons. There are a huge amount of resources and websites dedicated to raising awareness about the Holocaust.

Holocaust Education Trust Ireland does a huge amount of work to raise awareness about the Holocaust and the devastating aftermath it has had on those affected and the world. They seek to inform and enlighten in order to prevent another atrocity ever occuring again.

They have a huge amount of resources and information for teachers and students. One of the most important resources they have is survivors testimonies. With personal testimonies becoming fewer and fewer with each passing year, it’s important to listen to these testimonies. A few personal testimonies which are well worth looking are from survivors such as Tomi Reichental, Eile Wiesel, Jan Kaminski, Suzi Diamond, Ingse Radford. Each of these survivors have a haunting testimony of how children witnessed things no human ever should.

Resources for introducing the Holocaust to a class.

 

For many media resources such as this please check out hetireland youtube channel. There are numerous video clips which can be used in class.

Another resource which can engage students is this interactive map which can engage and introduce the topic.

Storybird is a Web 2.0 Tool which is an excellent tool for encouraging literacy and creativity in the classroom.


 

In a learning scenario, “starting with pictures” is powerful: it stirs the emotions while it engages the brain and jumpstarts students into their text, avoiding the blank-page syndrome. And it’s effective.

As stated on their website it allows students to overcome blank page syndrome which they can suffer when they feel pressured and overwhelmed when trying to think outside out the box when it comes to essay writing and creative lessons.

A platform for writers, readers, and artists of all ages.

As storybird is free to use and an accessible platform for all ages it could encourage students and family to create a story – which allows students families to feel more connected in their students learning.

Also, it allows for communal projects and collaborations between both students and classes. This cross over can led to a library of books which can be sold and published if it’s wished through the paid feature to download and sell a book created. This incentive to allow students work to be sold and publish work can not only build up the students and schools portfolio but raise much needed funds for schools.


 

A massive attraction of Storybird is that it can be used with any devices, whether it be a phone, a tablet, a laptop, a netbook or a school computer.

One other feature which I would encourage when using storybird is the use of paragraphs. For History and English paragraphs play a huge part in the layout of essays and the overall presentation/impression mark.

One other feature of storybird which makes it very attractive in a classroom and school setting is due to the simple fact that it’s a private website no data is collected. A rising problem with websites is the collection of data and the risk this poses for users in the future.

Mental Health – Ireland

While using TwitterDeck earlier this week an interesting article cropped up.

Ireland has officially been listed in the top ten happiest countries in the world according to new research released earlier in the year (which focused on 142 different countries).

The Legatum Institute in the UK has unveiled their annual Prosperity Index and Ireland has been listed as the tenth happiest country in the world.

Web 2.0 – History Hub

Another great history resource is History Hub.

History Hub is a great resource for senior cycle history and even an undergraduate standards.

It has excellent resources for Junior and Leaving Certificate history and with the 1916 Rising coming up listening to Podcasts is an excellent way to engage students in the classroom and get them motivated in helping commemorate 1916.

Additionally, one feature of History Hub which I enjoyed is their From the Archives section of their website. More and more it’s noticeable that students are losing out on engaging with primary and secondary sources as we are teaching for an exam. Though true it’s great to be able to use primary sources from archives whereas possible.

Additionally,for T.Y. and senior cycle history students can use the website to get ideas for Research projects and topics.

Another simple fact about History Hub which makes it worth checking out is it’s updated regularly and they have a mailing list which you can subscribe to. I found this idea appealing as I sometimes forget what website I saw a great resource on but if I’m on their mailing list a quick search of emails usually turns up what I was looking for.
